Classwork for 11-28-06

Now that we have reviewed the mechanics of English and Italian sonnets, you need to read and study sonnets. We will focus on Shakespeare since he is the standard for most of us and there are many great resources available to us. Before doing so, let me point you to several, additional resources on sonnets. The first is "Sonnet Central" that has all kinds of sonnets and links to explore other sites. There are also sites from UCONN and elsewhere that have interesting information.

Classwork

Your task is to look at two Shakespeare sonnet sites, the first is this one (The Place 2 Be...) and the second is this one (The amazing web...). Pick the one you like best, read some sonnets, look at the analysis, and then write a brief comment on this blog about the sonnet; list the number (e.g. Sonnet 38), and one thing you learned about it (theme, tie words, metaphor). When you comment, you must make up a short name, a pseudonym for yourself, no more than 5-7 letter, that you will always use to comment with - tell me the name in class. Under no circumstances will you use your own name. This is classwork and will be graded.

Hey Mr. Little, i read Sonnet number 40. I liked how he compared what his lover did to his heart as a robbery. He shows that just because it only has to do with your heart, dosent mean that it cant connect to other real life things that really did hurt others.

i read #148. i think it was really pretty (on the 1st page). it was nice =)

Sonnet 144 contradicts the two things the author loves the most, his angel and the evil woman.

I read Sonnet 145 by Shakespeare, Those lips that love's own hand did make, from the website http://www.sonnets.org/shakespeare.htm#145. This sonnet was about a woman saying "I hate" to the author. However, when she saw the state that he was in and how her words made him feel so bad she ended up changing what she had to say to him. Instead of her saying just I hate, she added a "not you" to the end because she didn't want to hurt his feelings nor upset their relationship. This sonnet made me realize how words can hurt a person and how you should watch what you say because you may hurt a person and or their relationship with you and good friends are hard to come by. You should also take into account how you feel when someone says an unkind word to you so you will always know how it feels to be the person receiving the malice and harsh words of a friend.

On the first site I enjoyed Sonnet number 138. I think it describes the way that so many people consciously choose to ignore a lie in order to maintain what they wish was the truth. In this sonnet, the author makes the choice to accept the woman despite her unfaithfulness and rationalizes it by equating it with his personal faults. He claims that her lies are no worse than him telling her that he is young when in fact he is past his prime. Thus, he can keep his illusion and convince himself that she is in fact faithful. I learned that some of the author's word choices (unlearned, untutored) refer to the way the author's contemporaries may have viewed him.

i read sonnet #8
i like it because it compares to real life. it says that the person is just sitting there sad; listening to slow music because the life that he is living isnt what he wants. He hears the music as a happy family that he does not have because he is dedicating his life as a single man which makes him miserable.

I REALLY ENJOYED THIS POEM. I like how the author compares the beauty of the women to oher people and other things such as senery and nature.

I read sonnet #154 and I thought it was really interesting because Shakespeare is talking about someone who wants to be cured, yet he uses nymphs and fire to represent love and healing and that just struck me as a little odd, though it fits really well in the sonnet.

Sonnet 108 (first link)2nd attempt i wrote more the first time but i can't remember it all.
This sonnet talked about people in love with each other. The best part of the sonnet to me is when the author says what in his brain can he write about her that would describe her.

I read # 3 and it was talking about a young man and it also had a lot of properties of a sonnet and i really think that I was able to connect this sonnet a lot.

The poem that i read was "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day". In this poem what i think that he is basically saying is that he is making a connection between a person and the way that it is on a summer day. I like some of the connections that he is making between the person and the summer.

I read Sonnet #82. I liked it because I found it funny how the poet would flatter the poets work and then talk about how the poets themes are used and abused. He also talks about how the rival need to talk to others so they can recognize his poems. At the end the poem the poet who wrote this tells his rival that his gloves are off and he is ready to challege the rival to find out that who is the better writer. This is what I interpret and comments about the Sonnet I read.

The poem was much differnet then I ever read before. It describe his memories and other people memories. It discuss how there are many key things in life. For example (If all were minded so, the times should cease,
And threescore year would make the world away.)

Sonnet explain how much he loved his love. They used love a lot to show how much he loved her. Basically try to decribe how much love he had for her.

I read sonnet 42. I liked this sonnet very much. It is about a man who was in love with this women. The women wanted to be friends with the mans best friend. Then, they ended up gettin too close and the women fell in love with the man's best friend. Te man lost his lover and best friend. The crazy thing is that the man wasn't even madd at his loss. He said that him and his best friend are so alike that if she loves his best friend, the she must also love him. Also, there are rea world cases when this happeneds (except for the man's feelings about the situation). This was a great sonnet with a great plot.

~I READ SONNET #71. THIS SONNET TALKED ABOUT AFTER DEATH. HE SAID THAT WHEN HE IS DEAD HE DIDNT WANT PEOPLE TO MOURN WHEN HE IS GONE BUT KNOW THAT HE STILL LOVED THEM AND IS OFF THIS EARTH INTO A BETTER PLACE. I LIKED THIS QUOTE THE MOST BECAUSE I JUST LOST SOMEONE CLOSE TO ME RECENTLY AND IT JUST CAUSED ME TO REFLECT ON THE WHOLE SITUATION. HE ALSO WANTED THEM TO FORGET AND LIVE THEIR LIFE.~

"To me, fair friend, you never can be old"
Shakespeare Sonnet 104

This sonnet is written for a woman the author has known for a period of time.
The sonnet is full of numeral references.

For Example, the author refers to how long they’ve known each other repetitively.

“….Three winters cold
Have from the forests shook three summers' pride;
Three beauteous springs to yellow autumn turned”

“…Three April perfumes in three hot Junes burned”

The author despite his repetition of the number of years that have past, aims to reassure the addressee that she doesn’t appear to have aged.

“To me, fair friend, you never can be old;
For as you were when first your eye I eyed,
Such seems your beauty still…”

After reading a couple of sonnets, I finally chose the second website, sonnet #79. I could actually understand this sonnet and translate it into my own words. It seems that his source for ideas, or his aid is no longer just his. But other poets have "worked" with him as well, so not only has his love been betrayed, but his work is no longer original or unique.

Hey, i read Sonnet I. I liked it because it was about life. For example, it talks about when your young and when you get old.

Sonnet 31 was talking about how love lives on. When someone passes away their love still lives on. I found this sonnet very interesting.

I liked sonnet I because it was interesting. I learned that the words in the sonnet have different meanings.

Hello Mr. Little!

I read, "Love is too young to know what conscience is". The theme is betrayal. In this poem is has a strong meaning and if read carefully with passion, you can understand that most teenagers and mainly people experience today.

The poet was expressing his emotions on his love's affairs and how he feels about it. Of course nobody wants to find out that their love has been cheating on them.

"Her "love" for whose dear love I rise and fall." This line in the poem makes me feel that he doesn't believe in love anymore. He calls their "relationship" their so-call love. And expresses that he is upset but feels nothing anymore because he is hurt.

(Sonnet 63) This sonnet is talking about age. I think the poem was saying that no one can take away his (the author) lover's beauty. It was a little confusing for me to understand everything the poem said.

I read Sonnet number 40 it was called "Take all my loves, my love, yea, take them all". I feel that the sonnet was about someone that is in love and they want to let their loved one know that they want them to love them as much as he or she loves them back.

Hi Mr.Little I enjoyed the sonnet about the man who talks about how ugly this girl is but under it all she is still beautiful to him.

I read the sonnet about heart.... it that sonnet it was talking about how he felt....

Hi Mr. Little i read sonnet 62 about self love. I thought this sonnet was interesting and true. The reason why is because I thought that Shakespeare made this sonnet thinking about everyone feels but in reality thats not it really is.

Hi Mr. Little! I read Sonnet 133. I thought it was really sad, because his friend and him were in love with the same girl. They both wanted the firl for themselves, but neither wanted to see his friend hurt because of his own happiness. I liked it though, because it talked about how stuck he felt because if he tries to protect his friend, he will lose his girl, and if he keeps the girl, he will lose his friend. Poor Shakespeare!

I read sonnet 144 it was very sad that one of his lovers was like an angel and the other was like a devil. Even though he loves both them
